چکیده

During a national investigation concerning all patients with Huntington's chorea in South Africa, 17 affected children, comprising 7 7% of the patients in the survey, were identified. Although the frequency of juvenile Huntington's chorea in the white community was equal to that reported from around the world, the frequency was much higher in the population ofmixed ancestry. It is possible that this unique situation is related to the genetic constitution of this latter group.

Genetic testing for Huntington's disease in South Africa.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a late-onset inherited progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterised by motor impairment, chorea, dementia and psychiatric disturbances associated with selective neuronal death in the striatum and cortex. Onset of the disease is usually in midlife, with most cases being diagnosed between 35 and 50 years of age, with a range from 2 to 90 years. Death usually o...

A clinico-genetic study of psychiatric disorder in Huntington's chorea.

The introduction in 1985 of a genetic linkage test programme to identify asymptomatic heterozygotes among subjects at 50% initial risk for Huntington's chorea required a review of all cases of Huntington's chorea and their families referred to the Department of Medical Genetics of the Oxford Regional Health Area (population 2.5 million). From a representative sample of these subjects, psychiatr...

Huntington's disease: genetic heterogeneity in black African patients.

OBJECTIVE Huntington's disease (HD) has been reported to occur rarely in black patients. A new genetic variant- Huntington's disease-like 2 (HDL2)--occurring more frequently in blacks, has recently been described. The absence of an expanded trinucleotide repeat at the chromosome 4 HD locus was previously regarded as a way of excluding classic HD. The objective of this paper is to describe a num...

A genetic register for Huntington's chorea in South Wales.

A regional genetic register for Huntington's chorea in South Wales is described, based on previous family studies in this area, which is one of high prevalence for the disorder. The primary role of the register is to help in the efficient delivery of services, including genetic counselling, to affected subjects and relatives, and to monitor changes in the population at risk. The mode of operati...

Juvenile Huntington's disease: a case report and literature review.

Huntington's disease is the most frequent neurodegenerative disease with a prevalence of fewer than 10 cases per 10,000 inhabitants; the juvenile form is responsible for less than 10% of all cases. Huntington's disease belongs to the group known as "triad syndromes," which evolve with cognitive, motor and neuropsychiatric manifestations. Around 30% of patients debut with behavioral symptoms, wh...
